The city of Wheeling, West Virginia, plans to demolish the former Clay School in East Wheeling to build a new multi-purpose recreation center. Closed in the 1990s and acquired by the city in 2021, the school spans nearly an entire block. The planned recreation center aims to serve both seniors and children and integrate community spaces like the J.B. Chambers Memorial Recreation Park and the Nelson Jordan Center.
A survey of over 1,000 residents aged 20 to 35 revealed strong community support for recreation and education facilities. The project is being guided by Tipping Point, a real estate developer, which is analyzing community feedback and collaborating with industry professionals to establish construction budgets and design plans.
The city has yet to finalize the design or budget for the project. While the cost of demolition is currently unknown, officials emphasize the potential for the project to transform the site into a vibrant community asset.
