Wheeling Gateway Center Project Update: Continued Demolition Progress

Demolition of the former Wheeling Inn is entering its final stages, with 90% of the structure now removed. Crews are carefully sorting through the rubble, separating materials like concrete, brick, and steel for processing and reuse as infill. The site’s transformation is progressing steadily, marking a key step toward a new chapter for Wheeling’s riverfront.Amid the debris, the heavy concrete and rebar of the Wheeling Inn highlight its mid-century design. In its place, the Gateway Center is planned—a modern structure incorporating glass, steel, and brick to reflect the city’s industrial and architectural history. Its design will complement the surrounding area, stepping back to preserve views of the historic Wheeling Suspension Bridge. As demolition moves into its final phase, the planned Gateway Center represents progress toward revitalizing this section of the riverfront. The development will balance contemporary design with respect for Wheeling’s historical character, creating a space that connects the city’s past with its future.
