The Gateway Center Project Offers a New Vision of Wheeling’s Suspension Bridge, and of the City’s Future

The demolition of the Wheeling Inn has unveiled a stunning, unobstructed view of the historic Suspension Bridge, sparking excitement and pride in the community. However, anticipation is growing for what comes next—the Wheeling Gateway Center. Led by the Wheeling Convention and Visitors Bureau, in partnership with Tipping Point Real Estate Development, Wheeling Heritage, and Ohio County, the new center will be designed by Desmone to celebrate Wheeling’s history while enhancing tourism and community engagement.

The center will feature a rooftop restaurant, multiple viewing decks, heritage exhibits, outdoor recreation spaces, and community venues. Developers have assured the public that the building’s design will complement and highlight the bridge rather than obstruct it. Expected to attract 175,000 visitors annually, the project aims to boost local tourism and revitalize downtown Wheeling. With construction moving forward, community input will play a key role in shaping the final Heritage Center experience.
