Justice presents $4.4 million grant for Wheeling Gateway project

West Virginia Governor Jim Justice presented a $4.4 million Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization Grant in Wheeling to support the Wheeling Gateway project. This grant is seen as the final funding piece needed to launch the project, which aims to establish a visitor and cultural center at the city’s entrance off Interstate 70. Plans include a rooftop restaurant, a landscape connecting to the Heritage Trail, and river access to make the area a hub for tourism. Demolition of the former Wheeling Inn, which obstructs views of the historic suspension bridge, is set for December, with groundbreaking expected by May. This project aims to increase tourism and highlight Wheeling’s heritage.
