The city of Wheeling received a $500,000 Brownfield grant for asbestos abatement at the former Clay School building. This funding, covering the entire estimated cost, allows for environmental remediation essential for the future plans of the building. Additionally, the U.S. EPA awarded a $40,000 planning grant for potential redevelopment. The City of Wheeling, with consultant Tipping Point, will use this funding to explore options for revitalizing the historic structure, which has been vacant since the 1990s.
